How to manufacture products in China?

Product manufacturing in China

Looking to manufacture your next product in China? You may have heard numerous stories from fellow entrepreneurs, that it isn’t as straightforward as it seems. There are numerous things that you need to consider when manufacturing a product in China.

What many people still have instilled in their minds is that China is still considered a cheap-labor, low-quality manufacturing hub, but in fact, this has changed drastically in the last few years, especially with China’s 2025 initiative.

China has begun transitioning into a high-premium manufacturing country. With this in mind, more and more startup companies and corporations are flocking to China to join the gold rush of this new innovation hub of the world.

With the increase of innovation, the ecosystem also evolves itself to accommodate this new era of Chinese innovation. So, when you’re considering manufacturing products in China, you should be looking toward China for its expertise and vast talent pool of specialist engineers and technicians.

Finding the right manufacturing partner in China

It’s common to feel rather overwhelmed before manufacturing in China, by the sheer amount of manufacturers dotted in and around the country. The Greater Bay Area alone hosts hundreds of thousands of manufacturers. With this in mind, it’s very easy to easily get caught up in working with the wrong manufacturing partner.

What has also been misunderstood is that a large manufacturer doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the right manufacturer for you. Consider the following. Innovation needs flexibility and room-for-error, without it innovation’s success rate reduces significantly (the success rate is already very low).

So, looking for a manufacturing partner in China can be quite difficult. As innovation has specific criteria that need to be fulfilled. As a startup company, finding the right resources will always be an issue, as the sheer investment needed is too great.

However, there is an extensive amount of resources and manufacturers in China who are able to offer such help. When you begin looking for a manufacturing partner, you of course must consider four main things.

  • Expertise: Is the manufacturing provider you’re about to work with truly qualified to take on your project. If you’re working in medical technology and the manufacturer has only worked on children’s devices, then they’re probably not going to be a good fit for you.

  • Infrastructure: This is a key bit of importance. Does your manufacturer have the necessary equipment/infrastructure designed to support your project? In some cases, a manufacturer will outsource part of the production to a third-party manufacturer, you do not want this, as it risks quality and security issues.

  • Previous Work: Looking into a manufacturer’s past work is valuable insight that could easily help you determine the right fit between them and your company. It’s even worth having a discussion with their previous clients and get feedback from them.

  • Communication: This is a common concern among startup founders looking to manufacture their products in China. You need to ensure the manufacturer will be happy using your channels of communication. Otherwise, this could create misunderstandings and lead to serious problems down the road.

It isn’t too difficult to find a manufacturing partner in China, however, finding the right one is, in itself, its own challenge.

Many manufacturing regions in China usually have a vast international community. There are plenty of resources out there to help you make the right decision. In fact, many manufacturers in China are becoming more and more open about their operations, as they understand trust is a very important factor among foreign companies.
