Is anywhere safe? Of course not! There is a stigma attached to this IP stealing, low quality manufacturing China. It’s absurd! Almost all consumer electronics come from Chinese factories (Vivo, DJI, Huawei, Xiaomi, Lenovo). It is clear that China can produce high quality products. However, how to overcome the IP issues?
Producing in China
Put simply ignorance is key here. Founders are neglecting to respect how Chinese businesses operate. If you’re not willing to take the time to run proper due diligence on your engineering, manufacturing counterpart, then ultimately the fault lies with you. You can easily manufacture in China with the assurance of protection. A founder must only be wise enough to research beforehand.
Another solution to this issue, is to be as close as possible to your manufacturing counterpart. There is no reason for a company not to maintain a close relationship throughout their partnership. Go and see them, meet them, understand their business structure. Don’t be naive and think China is hit and miss with trusted partners, go there, and immerse yourself into the manufacturing community.
